Gun batteries are carried by some small vessels and all capital ships, sometimes as their sole armament, sometimes in addition to fixed guns.

Batteries only fire defensively in response to incoming attacks, and only a very limited number of batteries can fire at a single attacker at once. As such they may prove ineffective in capital ship battles with few smaller vessels.
